DESIGNER GRANDSTANDS (article first published : 2005-03-23)

Audiences land their bums in the butter as designer seating stands are imported for Mamma Mia! The smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, will open at the International Convention Centre Durban next week.

With the demand for a more professional approach to seating stands and the adoption of international regulations and standards, promoters of the Mamma Mia! production turned to an innovative German company for the answer.

PERI is one of the world's largest manufacturers and suppliers of formwork, shoring and scaffolding systems.

The designer grandstands from PERI have been specially imported for the greater safety and comfort of the Mamma Mia audiences. The new seating stand system conforms to all current regulations and offers new erection techniques making them ideal for touring shows.

The convention centers in each of the cities will be converted into seated theatre-style venues. Some 2,500 raised comfortable tip-up seats on a fully closed deck, provide maximum access width and more than adequate space to walk freely between the rows.

The body-shaped seats have a high backrest and the patterned non-slip surfaces, will allow the spectators to enjoy the show in the greatest comfort.

Mamma Mia! is presented by Big Concerts in association with SABC2, Jacaranda 94.2, KFM 94.5 and East Coast Radio in support of Unite Against Hunger. It runs at the International Convention Centre Durban from March 25 to April 3. Book at Computicket at www.computicket.com or call 083 915 8000.
