QUICK AND EASY CRAFTS GREETING CARDS (article first published : 2004-12-13)

Quick and Easy Crafts have brought out a series of wonderful step-by-step projects, which are simple to make and the results are stunning. The books are aimed at new crafters looking for clear, practical advice on popular craft subjects, as well as skilled crafters looking for new ideas. Each book in the series has been written by a crafts expert with a passion for his/her particular subject. These books would be suitable for community projects.

One of these exciting craft books is Greeting Cards. The author Cheryl Owen shows how easy it is to make hand-crafted greeting cards to show the recipient how much you care about them. The book contains 15 step-by-step projects, all with clear instructions and beautiful colour photographs. Projects are made using different techniques, and most projects show variations hints and tips. Instead of making a card, the idea shown can be used on writing paper or reduced to fit onto envelopes or even calling cards.

The materials used in the projects are all readily available from stationers or hobby and craft shops, and include a wide variety of items found in households, which can be used to decorate the cards. A list of suppliers and their addresses are given at the back of the book.

Each design has an index showing the level of expertise needed to make the product, and in the front of the book there are detailed instructions on the Tools, Materials and Techniques used for the projects.

The very first project is a 3D Bird House, which has been designed for skill level 1, and would make a delightful gift for a child or someone interested in bird life. The variation given is a little Gingerbread House, which could be filled with little goodies for kids.

Techniques used are beaded, embossed, metal, pressed flowers, wire, needlework, stenciled, glass and silk painted and resist-painted cards. There is even a Driftwood Ship made from various recycled materials, and this would make a very different bon voyage gift/card.

Templates of the designs used for the projects are available at the back of the book, and these designs can be photocopied to suit the application.

Greeting Cards is published by New Holland Publishers (U.K.) Ltd. and is available at a retail price of R109.95.
