QUICK AND EASY CRAFTS GLASS PAINTING (article first published : 2004-12-13)

Quick and Easy Crafts have brought out a series of wonderful step-by-step projects, which are simple to make and the results are stunning. The books are aimed at new crafters looking for clear, practical advice on popular craft subjects, as well as skilled crafters looking for new ideas. Each book in the series has been written by a crafts expert with a passion for his/her particular subject. These books would be suitable for community projects.

One of these exciting craft books is Glass Painting by Cheryl Owen. The book contains 15 step-by-step projects, all with clear instructions and beautifully clear colour photographs. Projects are made using different paint techniques, and most of the projects give theme variations, hints and tips.

The materials used in the projects are all readily available from hobby and craft shops and a list of suppliers in South Africa and their addresses are given at the back of the book. Each project has an index showing the level of expertise needed to make the product, and in the front of the book there are detailed instructions on the Tools, Materials and Techniques used for the projects.

The ideas shown, which can be used on all glassware products, can add to livening up a gift of a set of wine glass from being just ordinary to being absolutely stunning.

There is an interesting project for a Frosted Shell Jar, which uses a simple glass frosting spray, and this would make a lovely gift as a bathroom accessory.

A little higher up the skill level is an exciting Mosaic dish, which is really an open invitation to try your hand at mixing vibrant colours to suit the application. The mosaic is drawn onto the glass surface with glass outliner. This would make a lovely gift for a centrepiece on a coffee table.

Christmas tree decorations in the form of gilded glass chandelier drops is another way of livening up the Christmas tree, and these decorations can be kept for years.

A project for the higher skill level is an Embellished Photo Frame. This project may take longer than the lower skilled projects, but the finished item is a treasured gift which can be appreciated for many years.

Templates of the designs used for the projects shown are also available and these designs can be photocopied to suit the application.

Glass Painting is published by New Holland Publishers (U.K.) Ltd. and is available at a retail price of R109.95. Sue Holloway
