THE ANTI-AGEING COOKBOOK (article first published : 2004-10-15)

It has been said that growing older is a fact of life. We cannot stop the process but we can control the effects with a healthy lifestyle. As author Teresa Cutter mentions, we are born with certain genes and these cannot be changed, no matter how healthily we eat and look after ourselves. It is just a matter of finding alternatives to the usual fatty foods, which we take for granted, and learning to eat properly and healthily.

The Anti-ageing Cookbook recommends that people eat a wide variety of natural, wholesome, fresh foods, cooked as simply as possible, and drink plenty of water and juices.

In the introductory pages, the book offers clear, concise information on essential nutrients and gives detailed information on anti-ageing superfoods, which include avocados, berries, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, citrus fruit, fish and various other foods and spices, which are readily available in South Africa.

The Anti-ageing Cookbook has some very good menus to use for those special dinner parties, with short preparation times for the busy executive. The busy housewife can also benefit from this book, as it gives enough menus for every night of the week, without excluding sweet temptations for both adults and children.

Health conscious gym fanatics would really appreciate the interesting section on Strength-Energising Foods, which includes as many as 20 different recipes to satisfy those hunger cravings.

The Anti-ageing Cookbook offers a variety of menus with delicious breakfasts, salads and vegetables, all using fresh, nourishing ingredients. Organic flours are used in place of normal processed flours, and all ingredients are available from health shops.

For those people who cannot do without their puddings and sweets, there are tasty easy desserts made with fresh fruits and gives an intriguing recipe on Lime and Green Tea Tiramisu, which sounds absolutely delicious, especially for the hot summers of South Africa.

This book gives a wonderful look into the ways of healthy eating. The recipes are all straight-forward and easy to follow. All ingredients are readily available from fresh markets, health shops and local supermarkets.

The Anti-ageing Cookbook is published by New Holland/Struik Publishers and retails at R149.95. I can really recommend it as a great gift to anyone who enjoys cooking. Sue Holloway
