KIDS IN THE KITCHEN (article first published : 2004-10-1)

Sara Lewis, mother of two, has compiled 60 simple and delicious recipes for children in Kids in the Kitchen. While reviewing the book, I thought it best to put it to the test with my three year old. Food was stirred, mashed and generally spread all over counters and us, but the step-by-step and well laid-out recipes were easy to do and much fun was had by all. Even the book survived the trial with its sturdy laminated cover.

Kids in the Kitchen gives great tips on preparation and methods. The navigation made it easy to find our favourite recipes with colour-coded sections and large print. The author has inspired a new creative angle on even the simplest of recipes like stripy cheese toast. The full colour photographs are bright and inspiring.

There are recipes for all ages from tiny two’s to moms who need creative ideas to get kids to eat. The older child will enjoy wowing the family with an entire meal of sticky barbecued ribs to peach puff pies. They can even help you prepare for your next party with cashew dip and foccacia bread.

The recipes range from main meals, simple breads, cookies and puddings to the beautiful section on festive cooking ideas for Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

The book not only teaches kids how to cook and bake but important skills such as safety and hygiene, weighing, measuring and hand/eye co-ordination. It is a great book to enjoy together.

My only problem is, I have to go and reclaim my kitchen from the new budding chef in the family before I become redundant!

Sara Lewis has been the cookery editor for Practical Parenting magazine in the UK for the last 11 years. She has also written Veggie Food for Kids, The Lunchbox Book and 30 Minute Kids’ Cakes.

Kids in the Kitchen is published by Struik Publishers in softcover, ISBN: 1 86872 948 6. There are 144 pages and 180 full colour photographs. Retail price: R129.95 - Penny van der Merwe
