OSHUN BOOKS (article first published : 2004-09-12)

With all the tasks and desires that compete in a woman’s world, sometimes what a woman wants most is some time to herself; to reflect and to relax. Oshun Books aims to give women what they want, providing a space for them to express and learn about themselves.

In October 2004, Struik Publishers will launch a new imprint through books published by Oshun – the first in South Africa aimed at women.

Women are communicators. They love stories, particularly each others’ stories, and are listeners; sharing advice. Women read and share books. Yet no publisher has created an imprint that caters to local women. No imprint publishes books that encompass the South African woman’s unique experience.

Books published by Oshun will cater for South African women, aged 25 to 55 in LSM 8-10. Readers are likely to be urban, open-minded women with wide interests and a sense of humour. Oshun readers buy books as a reward for themselves or to broaden their knowledge and perspectives. They also buy books to share with special women in their lives; either as gifts or through book clubs.

The name, Oshun, is derived from the Yoruban goddess of love, intimacy, beauty and wealth. The figure of Oshun embodies the spirit of Struik Publisher’s new imprint, which encourages the expression of all that women hold close to their hearts and aspire to in the world.
