FELLOWSHIP SCHEME 2004 (article first published : 2004-09-7)

The 8th One World Fellowship Scheme, run in conjunction with the British Council, is currently open to applications to join the 2004 programme.

Aimed at senior radio and television broadcasters from developing countries in the Commonwealth, the scheme brings a select group of broadcast professionals to the UK for a 2 week period in November/December. During this time a packed and varied programme is set up, tailored to meet the interests of those selected to participate.

Previous participants have benefited enormously - one claimed to have learned more in two weeks than he had done in ten years.

The programme aims to provide an opportunity to share ideas, problems and themes, and hopefully develop new goals. It is also a chance for relationships and contacts to be made and for the UK media to learn about what South African participants have experienced and to hear what they have to say.

A typical 2 week programme would include meeting senior professionals from a variety of organisations. Last year's programme included visits to various departments of the BBC, Channel 4 and Sky; local broadcasters Meridian TV and South City FM; independent production companies Mentorn and TVE; relevant authorities such as OFCOM and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport; media NGOs Interworld Radio and IWPR; plus many others. An online diary created for the 2003 Fellows scheme is available to view on our website.

Successful applicants have their international travel and accommodation expenses taken care of for the duration of the programme, and are given a daily living and travel allowance. They are guided throughout the programme by representatives from the One World Broadcasting Trust.

The 2004 Fellowship Scheme runs from November 15 to December 1. Successful applicants would arrive in London on November 13 or 14 and depart on December 2 or 3. The closing date for applications is September 17 and successful applicants will be notified by October 8.
