DIAKONIA’S USER-FRIENDLY GUIDE (article first published : 2004-09-7)

The Diakonia Council of churches recently launched a user-friendly guide entitled Understanding our Economy and Society.

The book which covers basic economic principals is available from their offices. The Diakonia Council of Churches is an inter-church agency working with churches and church-based organisations to promote justice, development and peace.

This book is a product of the economics courses run by the author Bobby Marie for Diakonia Council of Churches in recent years. It is well-organised and easy to read, and makes good use of diagrams and drawings.

One of the important points the book makes is that the capitalist economic system is the result of a choice which a country makes. The South African government elected in 1994 to become part of the world capitalist system in the hope of securing benefits such as cheaper imported goods. Cheaper imports are indeed available now but at the cost of a massive loss of jobs in the manufacturing industries which have not been able to compete with these imports.

The book was published this year and is available from Diakonia Council of Churches at R50 each. Contact number: 031 310 3500.
