SIMPLE AND STYLISH WEDDINGS (article first published : 2004-09-5)

When planning a wedding, young couples often face a stark realisation through the exorbitant costs involved. In trendy circles, couples want to try to outdo their friends when planning table decorations, flowers, venue, etc. but these costs can be kept to a realistic level by using one’s imagination and skills to create a personalized decoration.

UK-based author Jo Rigg shows how to make elegant and stylish wedding settings and accessories with basic materials in her book, Simple and Stylish Weddings. These ideas can obviously be expanded to suit the individual and the occasion.

Flowers are an essential part of any wedding day and the book gives easy instructions for the preparation of table decorations, bridal bouquets for the bride and her entourage, the groom’s buttonhole and many others. As mentioned, the author states that it is preferable to use flowers in season to reduce costs.

Simple plastic garden chairs can be transformed by covering them in beautiful organza which catches the light with a sparkle. The finishing touch, once again, is flowers and these can be added on the day of wedding.

Jo Rigg gives detailed steps for different kinds of table decorations, from personalised candleholders and napkins to beautifully gilded table markers.

There are also wonderful ideas for “favour” boxes which can be expanded to whatever size required. These little boxes can be used for any occasion and are very easy to make up and personalise.

Making one’s own invitations can be very rewarding, as many people keep these invites in their photo albums along with snaps of the wedding. There is a delightful chapter on stationery and it proves that one no longer has to spend a fortune on cards. Patience and pride can make up the most beautiful cards for any special occasion.

The book is very informative and the instructions easy to follow, with clear pictures showing each step involved. The whole concept doesn’t only lend itself to weddings, but can be used for any special occasion being planned, such as engagements, 21st birthdays, anniversaries or a special dinner party.

Simple and Stylish Weddings is published in soft cover by New Holland and is also available in Afrikaans. Retail price is R119.95. ISBN: 1 84330 581 X – Sue Holloway
