CONFERRAL CEREMONY FOR INKOSI LUTHULI (article first published : 2004-07-26)

To launch the arrival of international sough-after Gandhi, King, Ikeda (GKI) Exhibition, the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College will confer the Gandhi International Peace Award to Inkosi Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli (1898-1967).

Dr Lawrence Edward Carter Sr., Dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, Professor of Philosophy and an ordained Baptist Minister will confer this award and medal to Dr Albertina Luthuli MP and daughter of Inkosi Albert Luthuli.

Democracy, anti-racism, multi-culturalism, peace, non-violence, anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism and quest for social justice summarises the lofty values for which Inkosi Albert Luthuli stood for. To pay tribute to this profound thinker, the Conferral Ceremony will be attended by senior officials of the KZN Provincial Government, representatives of the Ambassadors and Consulate Generals of many countries, member of the academia in KZN, KZN organisations and student organisations.

To complement the conferral ceremony, Dr Lawrence Edward Carter Sr. will deliver a public lecture on non-violent victories and activism in the life of great leaders of the 20th century. The aim of the lecture is to provide a source of hope and courage for young people and women who have suffered the effects of violence.

Durban Institute of Technology Gallery, Steve Biko in Durban is the host venue for this historic event which takes place on July 30 at 11h00. The Gallery is physically accessible by wheelchair and the gallery aims to make its programmes and activities accessible from seated position.
