LIVING IDEAS (article first published : 2004-06-28)

In terms of scope and attendance, the new East Coast Radio House & Garden Show is set to be the biggest ever this year when it runs at the Durban Exhibition Centre from July 2 to 11.

Durban’s popular and familiar House & Garden Show has an exciting new sponsor that will add a fun and interactive shopping environment for show-goers, out to improve their homes and lifestyles as never before.

“East Coast Radio is proud to partner with Durban’s biggest and most successful lifestyle exhibition,” says Trish Taylor, ECR’s Managing Director. “The radio station is a lifestyle brand so we believe the fit is perfect. We have been working closely with the organisers to ensure that the East Coast Radio House and Garden Show is simply fresh and fabulous!“

The East Coast Radio House & Garden Show will form part of the ECR’s Get A Life Competition, enabling show-goers to become finalists in line to win the grand prize of a house and lifestyle in the Plantations estate. Show-goers will also stand a chance of winning a brand new car at the show.

“This year’s theme, ‘living ideas’, is to encourage a creative mindset among show-goers,” says show director Diana Chandler of Kagiso Exhibitions. “It is aimed at bringing fresh thinking into the home environment. Reinforcing this concept is today’s trend of seeing the home as a living space where one is comfortable and secure and where cherished items have a rightful place in our décor. It’s all about recycling and being boldly imaginative. With the current property boom, the home is also an important investment asset that must be maintained by renovation and decoration for optimum market value”.

New to the Show is the ‘Estate Living Expo’ by Wakefields to take place in the additional hall on the Walnut Road side of the venue. This Expo will give visitors the chance to assess the lifestyle options that are on offer with a home within a secured estate. There will also be two new visitor entrances in Walnut Road with extra parking available to showgoers at the ICC.

Celebrating KZN’s superb alfresco lifestyle, the botanical influence is big this year and will move boldly indoors while a reciprocal trend sees our living spaces extending out to embrace fully the patio and garden elements of our homes. In keeping with this trend, the 2004 show layout offers a spacious green area, innovatively landscaped by Ethekwini Parks Department, with more alfresco catering by Bean Bag Bohemia. This will add a place for showgoers to take time out from their show shopping, while viewing more than 20,000sqm of goods designed to inspire home improvement.

Other drawcards will be Action Cooking by Celebrity Chefs, an upstairs Action Bar for ongoing sporting events and the Ethnic Food Guild, offering traditional SA dishes.

The East Coast Radio House & Garden Show takes place from July 2 to 11 at the Durban Exhibition Centre. Details of the event can be found at www.housegardenshow.co.za
