SOUTH 1 (article first published : 2004-06-23)

The South Project is a five-year programme designed to develop networks for cultural exchange between countries of the south, including southern Africa, Australia, the Pacific and Latin America.

South 1 is the initial gathering of representatives from participating countries to develop the parameters for future south-south exchange. It provides a unique opportunity to learn what is happening in the latitude and consider what role Australia might play as a southern nation.

South 1: The Gathering will take place from July 1 to 4 at the Sidney Myer Asia Centre, University of Melbourne and other locations.

The three days of talks feature a wide range of speakers, including South-African born writer and poet John Mateer (Australia/South Africa) with a recent book in Indonesia titled Semar's Cave; South African born but Melbourne-based clockmaker Will Matthysen (Australia/South Africa); South African-born and Auckland-based writer and theorist Elizabeth Rankin (New Zealand/South Africa), and South African-born ceramicist and painter Marie Strauss who currently lives in Dunedin (New Zealand/South Africa).

From South Africa comes Michael Mbata, an artist from Mkhambethini in KwaZulu-Natal and follower of the Shembe faith who was awarded the Maker in Residence 2004 at ArtPlay, Melbourne (The South Project). Also featured will be Mbulelo Mzamane (South Africa) writer and essayist, described by Nelson Mandela as “one of South Africa's greatest intellectuals”. Another South African artist on the programme is Greg Streak (South Africa), founder of Pulse, which promotes social inclusivity through art.

Among the partners in the South 1 project are the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (South Africa); Pulse Artist Network, and The African Arts Centre.
