VODACOM BEACH AFRICA (article first published : 2004-04-11)

Durban is to stage what promises to ber one of the world’s greatest beach festivals with this year’s Vodacom Beach Africa festival of fun on Durban’s Golden Mile, from New Pier to Snake Park Beach from July 2 to 11.

The Festival has grown considerably, encompassing beaches right up to Snake Park. This year’s event will offer a totally different experience, with unusual action-filled extreme sports, a high quality retail element, innovative food courts and casual beach bars offering food from around the world to local and international visitors.

A highlight of the ten day festival is the night surfing and Mr Price Pro, which attracts surfers from around the globe. Another innovation at this year’s event is four themed zones, categorising events according to various interest groups:

An Extreme Zone targeted at the youth, includes retail outlets and amongst many adrenaline-driven sports, a national skateboard event, reverse bungee jumping, scad-diving, bungee trampoline, freestyle BMX, motorcross and the national target sky dive championships.

The Entertainment Zone will include fun family participative events like kite-flying competitions, educational children’s activities and corporate events such as beach volleyball, soccer and rugby.

The Retail Zone will reflect the beach culture of the event while the Food Courts will offer everything from the taste of Africa to seafood and sushi.

Vodacom Beach Africa 2005 will be officially ‘linked’ to the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival in the United States of America and the The Bondi Beach Festival (Festival of the Winds), in Australia.
