BERNARD JAY AMONG BOSS OF THE YEAR® SEMI-FINALISTS (article first published : 2008-08-29)

Bernard Jay, CEO of The Johannesburg Civic Theatre, was named as one of only 15 semi-finalist in the Boss of the Year Award 2008 this week.

The 19th prestigious Boss of the Year® Award not only boasts a new patron and main sponsor in the form of MTN SA Foundation, but also an above-average crop of entries leading the organisers – for the first time in the history of the Award– to acknowledge the 15 who made it to the semi-finals before selecting six finalists in September, followed by the announcement of the overall winner on October 16.

Selected from a total of 226 nominations received nationwide, Bernard Jay is the only arts representative among 15 models of excellent workplace leadership and representing various business areas.

The colleague who nominated Bernard for the stringent process says: “What really makes Bernard stand out is his passion for the entertainment industry and the magic it creates, his phenomenal business skills, his ongoing desire to make our theatre one of the best in the world, his outstanding communication skills and ability to negotiate, the manner in which he cares for his employees and the people around him..."

Bernard Jay has been instrumental in the turnaround of the image and patronage of the JHB Civic Theatre. He has also grown the diversity of theatre goers and achieved an occupancy rate in excess of 85%. He was appointed CEO in July 2000 and his contract has since been extended to June 2012. He is responsible for the development of ballet theatre in Johannesburg, which he has achieved by building his own practising studio at the civic to draw in the dancers. He is instrumental in having the News Cafe built on the premises (now the highest grossing branch in the country)

Sponsors of the Boss of the Year® Award are: MTN SA Foundation as patron and main sponsor and Stabilo as Founder Sponsor. Other sponsors and prize-givers are: Aramis and Designer Fragrances; Paintings from well-known artists Ulric Roberts and Chrissie Malherbe courtesy of Die Kunshuis Clanwilliam, Décor Mechanics, Jenna Clifford Homeware Collection, Microsoft SA, Montecasino Conferences and Events, Sheaffer and Southern Sun Hotels.
