JOHN DUNN, CETSHWAYO AND THE THREE GENERALS (article first published : 2006-12-3)

John Dunn is widely remembered for his colourful life as hunter, advisor and confidante of King Cetshwayo, participant in conflicts of the time and as chief of a large tract of land north of the Thukela. The details of how he, as a youngster, ran away from Port Natal and lived for two years among the Zulu before being rediscovered and taken back to Natal to receive an education, and of how he then moved between two worlds for his adult life is far more fascinating than the summary.

The author kept notes of his experiences which were published in 1886, not long after the Zulu War, and these have now been republished by Arthur Konigkramer, Ron Lock and Peter Quantrill.

Originally published in Pietermaritzburg in 1886, John Dunn, Cetshwayo and the three Generals is edited by D C F Moodie and retails at R186.
