IMAGINE AT HILLCREST (article first published : 2006-04-24)

Imagine Gallery & Books was opened in May 2001 by Steven Duckworth after a brief collaboration with Richard Rennie and Nad's Galleries.

Initially, the Gallery displayed and sold paintings by many local artists from Hillcrest and surrounds as well as a good stock of Richard's watercolours.

In recent years, though, Steven has steered towards stocking an interesting variety of books, covering mainly Africana on the one hand, to fiction paperbacks by all the current popular authors, on the other.

A book exchange service is also offered. A growing antiquarian section is available, stocking collectibles such as Martin's Philosophy (1759), Andersen's Tales (1861), The Modern Playmate (1875), and Through The Looking Glass (1882), as well as classics by Dickens, Kipling, Tennyson, Livingstone, Churchill, etc.

There are biographies, histories and poetry as well as some modern first editions, which Steven will be glad to show to the more serious collector. A book repair service is also a further string in his bow, and customers' antique books are handled with the utmost care, with expert repairs being undertaken at very reasonable prices.

The remaining wall space is adorned with paintings and prints in a variety of styles and subjects.

Whether art or book lover, visitors to Imagine can be assured of personal, friendly service, where a cup of tea or coffee and good conversation awaits in the relaxed environment of The Heritage, with its attractive landscaped gardens.

Contact Steven at Imagine Gallery & Books on 031 765 2012. The shop is open seven days a week.
