Paddy Kearney, a long-time friend of Archbishop Denis Hurley and a former Director of Diakonia Council of Churches, has written a brief account of the Archbishop’s last 38 years up to his death in 2004, to accompany Archbishop Hurley’s memoirs covering the period 1915 to 1965.

This coffee-table, 200 page hardcover edition priced at R245 is expected to become an instant collector’s item, even if just for the large rare collection of photographs (b & w, sepia and colour), artifacts, newspaper clippings, etc which have been accurately reproduced due to the high quality printing by Interpak of Pietermaritzburg.

The five-page index makes for easy quick-reference through the 14 chapters, while the closing section of “Hurley Jokes” will bring back fond memories for many. A subscriber’s list and a list of 93 references accompany the index. Chapters include childhood at lighthouses; schooldays on Robben Island, in Newcastle and PMB ;as a young priest at Emmanuel Cathedral; youngest bishop in the world; first archbishop in Durban, and Chancellor of the University of Natal.
