FIRE, WATER AND ISIS POETRY (article first published : 2006-03-19)

The Live Poets Society is to launch three collections of poetry at their next meeting.

Allan Kolski Horwitz is one of the most prolific poets in South Africa. A leading light in Johannesburg-based Botsotso Publishing and the Botsotso Jesters performance group, he and his collective are also amongst the most prolific publishers of poetry in the country.

For over 10 years Botsotso has produced an annual anthology of avant garde works plus several other publications by individual poets in both book and CD format. Towards the end of 2005 they simultaneously published three impressive collections: Saving Water by Horwitz himself, Soulfire Experience by Siphiwe ka Ngwenya and isis x by 12 of South Africa’s leading women poets and photographers.

These collections will be launched by Horwitz, ka Ngwenya and some of the isis x poets at the next meeting of the Live Poets’ Society in Durban on March 28.

After the launches, those attending are welcome to give vent to their own poetic interpretations of the evening’s themes. Taking a cue from the titles of the publications, the subjects are Fire, Water & Isis. Then in the Poet Pourri session those present may air their work on any subject they wish.

The Live Poets Society Meeting takes place at 18h00 on March 28 in the Quarterdeck of the Point Yacht Club. You don’t need to perform, or even write verse, to attend. Everyone is welcome, as long as they appreciate poetry. Entry is free and there is no subscription fee, though contributions towards costs are welcome. There is a cash bar and guarded parking at R5. For more details contact Brett Beiles on 082 516 0517 or 031 266 4762 (a/h).
