SONG OF ATMAN (article first published : 2006-03-19)

During the forthcoming Time of the Writer Festival, Jacana Media will present Durban playwright Ronnie Govenderís first novel, Song of Atman.

Ronnie Govenderís play, The Lahneeís Pleasure is a legend in Durban and his previous work, At the Edge and other Cato Manor Stories, is now a school setwork.

Song of Atman is based on the life story of Chin Govender, the brother of Ronnie Govenderís mother, who returns home after nearly 20 years to his estranged family in Cato Manor in Durban in the 1940s, having been a penniless wine steward in East London and later becoming the first black owner of a hotel in District Six.

The story is a portrait of five generations of former indentured Indian labourers. The openness of Indian life and the intricacies of close families and communities form the backdrop of this complex and amazing tale.

Song of Atman will be launched at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on March 25 at 21h30 at the closing of Festival party.
