NEW BOOKS (article first published : 2000-07-20)

Struik New Holland Publishing has brought out three interesting new books: One Step Behind Mandela, Newman’s Birds by Colour and The Garden Recipe Book.

One Step Behind Mandela is the story of Rory Steyn, Nelson Mandela’s chief bodyguard, as told to Debora Patta. Priced at R89.95, it features 240 pages and a soft cover with flaps. Looking at Nelson Mandela’s presidency from Steyn’s point of view makes for an entertaining tribute to Madiba. It contains behind-the-scenes information and anecdotes about the former president and his family and colleagues and contains hitherto unseen photographs. Rory Steyn now runs his own VIP security company. Considered Nelson Mandela’s favourite journalist, Debora Patta was chief news editor at Radio 702 for many years. She currently works for e.tv as an executive producer and is presenter of the actuality programme Third Degree

Newman’s Birds by Colour by Kenneth Newman is priced at R139.95 and is a softcover publication with 304 pages and about 700 illustrations. Renowned bird painter, author and ornithologist, Kenneth Newman has contributed largely to the increased interest and awareness of birds in recent years. In Newman’s Birds by Colour, he presents a quick-identification guide to the common birds of southern Africa arranged in colour-coded chapters according to the dominant colour of the birds observed. The book was the concept of Irene Bredenkamp who, with Phoebus Perdikis, was responsible for the concept of bird identification by colour.

The Garden Recipe Book by Terry Möller is priced at R119,95. A softcover publication with flaps and 144 pages, it features 45 full colour photographs and 30 full colour illustrations. It will be invaluable to all lovers of beautiful gardens, particularly those who think they are not creative enough to plant up a garden of any merit. The book explains various design principles needed to create a successful garden, ingredients and step-by-step instructions needed for a specific garden as well as photographs of what the finished product should look like. Terry Möller is a keen gardener who left a career in marketing, human resources and public relations to pursue her interest in garden design and horticulture. A well-known gardening expert and lecturer, she travelled around the world to study and observe the way in which people design and care for their gardens.

Watch out for forthcoming reviews on these publications.
