LIPS LINE UP (article first published : 2006-01-21)

Some of the country's top poets are set to strut their stuff at the next gathering of the Live Poets Society (LiPS) in Durban. The occasion is the launch of the 12th issue of Fidelities literary journal which premiered towards the end of last year at the Poetry Africa Festival.

Edited by prize-winning poet and playwright Kobus Moolman, Fidelities boasts the cream of South African poets. The latest issue features several who have their own collections under their belts. In order of appearance in the volume, these include Moira Lovell, Gary Cummiskey, Marí Peté, Michelle McGrane, Allan Kolski Horwitz, Arja Salafranca, Ike Muila, Mphutlane wa Bofelo and of course Kobus Moolman himself.

Kobus will introduce some of these big names as well as highly gifted emerging poets who are also in the journal. Many who have appeared in previous issues will also voice their work.

That session will be followed by the evening's theme which Moolman has nominated as simply the number "12", this being the twelfth issue of Fidelities. In his words, "It may be interpreted as individually or loosely as desired." In this New Year, an alternative theme which poets are invited to expound on is Resolution. The Poet Pourri session follows, when poets may air their work on any subject they wish.

The get-together takes place on January 31 at 18h00 in the Quarterdeck of Point Yacht Club. There is no subscription or entry fee but contributions towards expenses may be placed in the donation box. All are welcome, regardless of whether they write poetry. A limited menu is available beforehand from the club's main bar, the meeting has its own cash bar, and there is guarded parking at R5.
