NEW POETRY (article first published : 2000-07-19)

Adams, in association with Deep South Publishing, Shabbir Banoobhai and the University of Natal Press recently launched three new poetry collections.

These are Ari Sitas’s Slave Trades & an Artist’s Notebook (Deep South Publishing); Shabbir Banoobhai’s own publication Wisdom in a Jug – Reflections of Love, and Kobus Moolman’s Time Like Stone (University of Natal Press).

Ari Sitas’s Slave Trades & an Artist’s Notebook has already been covered in a previous issue of D’ARTS. The long poem is an attempt to express the voice of the visionary, avant-garde poet, Arthur Rimbaud who in 1874 aged 20 abandoned poetry and left France for Africa.

Shabbir Banoobhai’s Wisdom in a Jug is a beautifully designed collection of thoughts and reflections of love and wisdom. The slimness of the volume belies the depth of its content.

Kobus Moolman’s Time Like Stone “speaks in the silences of our interactions with others and with ourselves”. His close observations of what is immediate – and often imperfect – inspire poems that look at the everyday with new eyes. Time Like Stone also contains excerpts from Moolman’s Karoo Journal, written during his stay in Nieu-Bethesda after winning the Helen Martin’s Fellowship, which traces the poet’s struggle for language over silence. Kobus is the education officer for the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg
