CARRYING THE FIRE (article first published : 2005-10-11)

Joan Metelerkamp’s first collection of poems Towing the Line won the 1991 Sanlam Prize for Literature. Great appreciation for her work ensured its frequent inclusion in journals such as Like a House on Fire (COSAW 1994) and New Coin. She’s also included in the poetry anthologies: The Heart in Exile (Penguin 1996), The Lava of this Land (Northwestern Univ Press 1997) and Running Towards Us: New Writing from South Africa (Heinemann USA 2000).

She then published three more collections: Stone no More (Gecko 1995), Into the Day Breaking (Gecko 2000) and Requiem (Deep South 2003).

Joan Metelerkamp’s fifth collection Carrying the Fire (Cape Town: Substance Books, July 2005) is described by her publisher, Paul Wessels, as ‘Classical, musical, the sequence is in three sections, with a fourth movement of prose narrative. It’s about what art costs – the price of making art. Therefore it is about politics, about desire. But more than that, it is a book about the art of writing poetry and prose. About how a writer deals with desire when it comes to writing and when it comes to everyday life.

Carrying the Fire will be launched alongside Robert Greig’s Rule of Cadence during the Poetry Africa festival on October 11 from 18h45 to 19h15 at the Wellington Tavern at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Both poets will be introduced by poet/playwright Kobus Moolman.
