SPECTRUM (article first published : 2005-09-21)

Paul Datlen, lecturer in Drama and Performance Studies on the local university campus, directs seven Drama honours students in Spectrum, a performance of a varied and eclectic mix of South African poetry, most of which has been published since 1994, giving the programme a contemporary feel.

There is no particular theme to the programme other than the fact that the poems are written by South Africans. Works featured are from poets such as Antjie Krog, Peter Horn, Oswald Mtshali, Chris Mann, Gcina Mhlophe, Deborah Steinmair, David Kramer, Tatamkhulu Afrika, and Pietermaritzburg's very own Moira Lovell and Kobus Moolman. The poems have been carefully selected to provide a challenge for the performers as well as enjoyment and entertainment for the audience.

Spectrum takes place at the Studio Theatre at the Hexagon Theatre Complex in Golf Road on the campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg.

Tickets R20 (R15 students) at the door. Performances will be held from September 28 to 30 at 18h00 with an earlier performance on September 28 at 12h20. More information from the Hexagon Theatre Office on 033 260 5537 or visit www.hexagon.ukzn.ac.za
