CAPE TOWN UNCOVERED – A PEOPLE’S CITY (article first published : 2005-09-8)

A tribute to the Mother City.

Cape Town Uncovered – A People’s City presents a vivid photographic peek into the city and its surrounds, detailing the beauty and diversity of Cape Town in a well-contained soft cover book that would excite any South African as well as any foreigner.

Authors Gillian Warren-Brown, a former assistant editor of Leadership Magazine, and Yazeed Fakier, a former new editor of the Cape Times, are based in Cape Town, with their talents originating in journalism and photography. This adds to the book’s character as you witness ‘real’ images as opposed to those doused in the general tourist coatings aimed at attracting the hoards from abroad. The captions and text provide brief descriptive elements for the reader, putting you on the same page as the subjects and allowing you to understand in detail what is being portrayed.

Although the book keeps with tourism in mind, Cape Town is given a personality that does not lie to readers or provide false pretences.

Photographer Eric Miller is a Cape Town-based photojournalist who has worked for more than a decade across Africa. His pictures portray real people; the higher echelon, the working class, the young, old, gay, straight, creative and adventurous. Of course, all these people appear happy because Cape Town is such a lovely place, but the background information provides the key to accepting that Cape Town is a city that is healing itself in light of its history and that of South Africa.

Great coffee table book! Cape Town Uncovered – A People’s City ISBN 1919930752 is published by Double Storey Books and is available at R185.00. - Ruby Bernard
