THE ELUSIVE MOTH (article first published : 2005-08-28)

Publishers Human & Rousseau in conjunction with Adams Booksellers will launch Ingrid Winterbach’s The Elusive Moth next week.

The story deals with entomologist Karolina Ferreira who goes to a small Free State town to do research on the survival strategies of a rare moth species. The Elusive Moth is the story of a woman amongst men: Karolina stays in the local hotel where she meets up with some fascinating – mostly male – characters. During the day, a natural healer introduces Karolina to the mysteries of the drought-stricken veld. At night, she is introduced and exposed to the town’s political intrigue and power games while playing snooker, drinking whisky in the ladies bar and dancing the tango with a certain mister Kolyn (a police informer ?).

The Elusive Moth is a novel about love and desire. The Afrikaans edition, published as Karolina Ferreira under the author’s then pseudonym, Lettie Viljoen, was awarded the M-Net Book Prize in 1994.

Ingrid Winterbach wrote several novels as Lettie Viljoen such as Klaaglied for Koos, Erf, Belemmering, Karolina Ferreira and Landskap met Vroue en Slang.

Karolina Ferreira was awarded both the M-Net Book Prize and the Old Mutual Literary Prize. Writing as Ingrid Winterbach, she received the W.A.Hofmeyr prize for Buller se Plan. Her previous novel, Niggie, was awarded the Hertzog prize in 2003.

Ingrid Winterbach, who lives in Durban, is also an artist, married to fellow artist and philosophy lecturer, Andries Gouws.
