NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. Athol Fugard’s Entrances and Exits (2005, David Philip) is now in stock at Adams Campus Bookshop at a cost of R65. Entrances and Exits is based on two meetings between a character called the Playwright – Fugard himself – and the great Afrikaans actor, Andre Huguenet. The first of these meetings takes place in 1956, the second in 1961: one year after Sharpeville and the year South Africa declared itself an independent republic. Fugard wrote his first successful play, The Blood Knot, in 1961 and it was the year Andre Huguenet took his own life. The latest of his autobiographical pieces, Exits and Entrances, proves once again Fugard’s mastery of the form and his ability to carry the personal into the great drama of life. Described as a moving and insightful work, it is as much to be read as to be seen. This book weighs the balance in favour of the reader with an analysis by Marianne McDonald and an interview with the author. More information from Cedric Sissing at Adams Campus Bookshop, University of Natal Durban, on 031 261 2320 or 082-873-2702, fax 031 261 6053 or e-mail: cedric@adamsbooks.co.za
