THE SETTLER (article first published : 2005-08-21)

In a few years time, the year 2010 will mark the 150th Anniversary of the coming of Indians to South Africa. They were brought into the country in 1860 to work on the sugar cane fields in KZN.

Dr TP Naidoo, editor of the now popular and highly-respected Indian Annual has launched a project to write a simple story titled, The Settler Toil, Tears & Triumphs. Dr Naidoo has already authored a book, The 1860 Settler in 1980 which marked the 120th Anniversary.

“Within a few years of the arrival of Indians in South Africa, they were employed on the railways, coalmines and gardens,” says Dr Naidoo. “Their story is one of the most remarkable in modern history. Theirs is a story of untold cruelty, harsh treatment and broken promises.

“Despite untold odds, the story of the 1860 Indentured Indians and their subsequent descendents is one of victory against terrible odds. Today over 1.3 million Indians live in South Africa . They are South Africans and know no second home.”

Featuring special paintings depicting the life of indentured Indians and his life in India, the book is due for release in 2006. It promises to be a benchmark publication.
