DESMOND NTSHALINTSHALI (article first published : 2005-08-16)

Twenty-four year old PANSA member, Desmond Ntshalintshali, from Zola, Soweto, has won the BBC World Service and British Council International Radio Playwriting Competition 2005 in the English as a Second Language Category.

Desmond Ntshalintshali’s script, Four for Straight Town, is an hour-long radio play about conspiracies of the past haunting the present and the present threatening the future.

The play has the taxi industry as its background. It’s a battle between a taxi owner who was one of the instigators of taxi violence in the mid-90s and a taxi driver from the Eastern Cape who came to Johannesburg in search of a better life after Mandela was elected president. The main message of the play is that there is more to everything than what there seems.

The judges were extremely impressed by Desmond Ntshalintshali’s talent. He is currently writing episodes for the TV series Soul Buddyz and co-develops print material for Soul Buddyz clubs. He wrote Speak Free, a 10-part children’s rights radio series for community radio stations and co-wrote The Magic Circle, a 30-part children’s radio series. He also co-wrote Jo’burg Café stories, a short play that was aired on the BBC World Service in 2003.

His prize is £2500 sterling, a trip to London to see the play being recorded and he will also attend a special prize-giving evening.
