JO’BURG (article first published : 2005-07-17)

Jo’burg, a book of Guy Tillim’s work is a photographic exhibition between two covers. It makes up a series of photographs that follows the fortunes of Johannesburg’s inner city residents as a new African city is forged after the apartheid era.

Born in Johannesburg in 1962, photographer Guy Tillim was and has worked across Africa for the past decade and a half. He started his professional photographic career in 1986 and joined Afripix, a collective of South African photographers with whom he worked closely until 1990.

Tillim has received many awards for his work, including a Mondi Award for photojournalism in 1998 and the Prix SCAM (Societe Civile des Auteurs Multimedia) Roger Pic in 2002. In 2003, he was awarded the Higashikawa Overseas Photographer Award in Japan. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions of South African art and photography, both in South Africa and internationally.

Tillim received the Oscar Barnack Award in 2005 for this work on Jo’burg’s inner city.

This series has been exhibited at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, the Durban Art Gallery, the South African National Gallery in Cape Town and PhotoEspaña in Madrid in 2005. Other publications include Departures (Michael Stevenson/Bell Roberts 2002) and Leopold and Mobutu (Filigranes Éditions, 2004).

This project was sponsored by Daimler-Chrysler through the Daimler Chrysler Award for Photography.

This book unfolds concertina-style and when opened up, end-to-end, is 16 metres long.

Jo’burg is published by Filigranes Éditions & STE Publishers - 2-35046-014-2 with 126 pages featuring 56 full-colour photographs. The book retails at R320 and is also available direct from STE.
