CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS (article first published : 2005-06-9)

The organisers of the European Union Literary Award 2005-6 has called for submissions.

This award is open to writers who can prove residence in South Africa and will consist of R25,000, a manuscript to be published in English by Jacana and a trip to an international literary festival.

Entrants must submit a first, unpublished work of fiction in English* (or translations of other South African languages into English providing the work has not been published in another language).

The recommended length of the novel is between 60,000 and 100,000 words. There should be one hard copy, A 4, typed (1.5 space, 12 point font, margins), securely bound, as well as a one-page summary of the novel and a one-page biography of the author including e-mail and telephone contact details.

Submissions should reach Jacana Media before September 1, 2005, clearly marked as follows: EU Literary Award, PO Box 2004, Houghton, 2041. No e-mail admissions will be accepted and manuscripts will not be returned.

Do not submit an unpublished novel if you are a published novelist. Several entries in the 2004 competition were disqualified because they were the first unpublished manuscripts of published novelists. Published novelists may not enter this competition, even under pseudonyms. However, published authors of short stories, plays or poetry may enter their first novels, memoirs, short stories, History, Geography or other non-fictional books.

A shortlist will be published on the Jacana website in December 2005. The award ceremony will take place in Johannesburg early in 2006. The published book will be presented to the winning author at Time of the Writer in 2006 in Durban.

The decision of the Jury will be final. No correspondence will be entered into. The names of the Jury will be announced shortly.

* Regarding the use of English: Although there are many languages spoken in the countries of the European Union, English is the only language that South Africa and the EU have in common. Similarly, it is impossible for all the judges to be fluent in all the South African languages so entries in languages other than English will not be considered.
