CLEOPATRA MOUNTAIN FARMHOUSE (article first published : 2005-05-9)

Following on from the recent successful launch of Quiet Food, the book of recipes from The Buddhist Retreat in Ixopo run by Louis and Chrissie van Loon, Adams and Ike’s Bookshops are pleased to announce the launch of Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse. This beautiful, lavishly-illustrated book reflects the unique and eclectic ambience of a very special place nestled in the Kamberg valley of the Drakensberg.

Cleopatra was bought by Fred Poynton (Richard’s grandfather) in the 1940s out of a need to find a cool mountain retreat to escape from the intense heat of the Zululand summers – and to enjoy his favourite past-time, fly-fishing.

The family dates back to 1848 when William Poynton of Lincolnshire arrived on the shores of Durban with some of the first settlers to Natal on board The Aliwal. They were builder’s merchants and built the very first house on the Berea. While running the famous Granny Mouse in Balgowan, Richard & Mouse Poynton used Cleopatra as their getaway. In 1993 they sold Granny Mouse and moved permanently to Cleopatra.

Building of the lodge started in 1997 and opened for business in September 1998. The lodge has become synonymous with fine dining and living and now the book captures in detail the special interior designs to create each of the unique rooms, as well as the sites and activities to be found in the surrounding area. The book includes exquisite photographs as well as delicious recipes from the farmhouse kitchen, with useful tips on vegetable gardening, cheeses, oils, etc.

A real treat for the senses, this stitched, hardcover coffee-table book has been designed and privately-published by the Poyntons with affectionate attention to detail. Recipes and food by Richard Poynton. Production, photography, styling and editing by Mouse, Donna and Tasha Poynton.

The book will be launched on May 11 at Ike’s Books & Collectables.

More information from Cedric Sissing at Adams Campus on 031 261 2320 or 082 873 2702 or Joanne Rushby at Ike’s Books & Collectables on 031 303-9214 (after 10h00).
