LAUNCH OF A MONOGRAPH (article first published : 2000-06-3)

At the opening of Wayne Barkerís exhibition at the NSA Galleries on Sunday (June 4) at 16h00, Durban Art Gallery director Carol Brown will launch a monograph on the artistís life and work. This marks the first in a series of monographs on South African artists initiated and produced by the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), in collaboration with the Arts Council of Switzerland, the MTN Art Institute and Chalkham Hill Press.

With comprehensive text on the artistsí life and work include contributions amongst others by Professor Alan Crump and Charl Blignaut, the book Ďs unique style has been assisted by Barkerís close collaboration and willingness to accomplish a fusion of real life and object making.

During the initial stages of research for Barkerís monograph, it became evident that there existed a general lack of documentation on a new generation of South African visual artists. A process was initiated by the French Institute to contribute to the discourse around contemporary South African art production by launching a large-scale publishing project with various partners. The aim is to produce a collection of books for professionals, galleries, critics and all art lovers. Each monograph will be accompanied by an educational brochure aimed at learners and art educators which will contribute to the expansion of the art education curriculum in South Africa.

With the assistance of the Arts Council of Switzerland (PRO Helvetia), the MTN Art Institute and Chalkham Hill Press, it is expected that between two to four books will be published in a year to be distributed through Exclusive Books outlets.
