BERLIN LITERATURE FESTIVAL (article first published : 2005-04-8)

The 5th international literature festival berlin (ilb) will take place this year between September 6 and 17. The main venue for the festival will be the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, Berlin.

The international literature festival berlin is presented by the Peter Weiss Foundation for art and politics (registered association) and the Berlin Festspiele. This year’s festival has been made possible by funding from the Hauptstadtkulturfonds (Capital-Culture-Funds).

Once again, the authors taking part in the “Literature of the world” programme will be chosen by an international jury. New members of the jury are: Jon Fosse (Norway), Antjie Krog (South Africa), Hanif Kureishi (Great Britain), Charles Simic (USA) and Adam Zagajewski (Poland).

Previous members of the jury who will also be taking part this year, are Philip Jeyaretnam (Singapore), Alberto Manguel (Canada/France), Abdelwahab Medded (Tunisa/France), Irish Radisch (Germany), Shashi Tharoor (India) and Mario Vargas Llosa (Peru).

This year 15 authors and illustrators from all over the world will be involved in the International Children’s and Youth Literature programme, amongst them Xabier P Docampo (Spain), An Na (Korea/USA) and Jenny Robson (South Africa/Botswana). Also participating will be Chen Jianghong (China/France), whose picture book Han Gan or the Wonder Horse was nominated for the 2005 German Prize for Young Person’s Literature.

Klein, Nathaniel Mackey, Eileen Myles, Michael Palmer, the historian Kevin Starr, D.J. Waldie, and the features editor of the Los Angeles Times, Steven Wasserman.

Between April 16 and 22, PEN WORLD VOICES - The New York Festival of International Literature created by the PEN American Centre - will take place in New York. The aim of the festival is to cultivate an intercultural exchange of ideas through public readings and discussions. The ilb has been taking part in the preparation of this festival since May 2004 and has secured authors such as Viktor Jerofejew, Cees Nooteboom, Adam Zagajewski, Yoko Tawada, Rafael Chirbes and Hanif Kureishi. Taking part on the German side are Carolin Emcke, Cornelia Funke, Durs Grünbein, Uwe Timm and Katja Lange-Müller. For the full programme see the homepage www.pen.org

The ilb’s international connection is also developing in Latin America. Since November 2004 the organisation has been cooperating with the most significant Latin American book exhibition in Guadalajara, Mexico, whose awards include the Juan Rulfo Latin American and Caribbean Literature Prize. The next book exhibition will take place between November 26 and December 4. Further information can be found under www.fil.com.mx

Another partnership takes place with the literature festival in Rome, Letterature Festival Internazionale di Roma which takes place this year between May 23 and June 20 in the Basilica di Massenzio, Forum Romanum.
