ART CLASS (article first published : 2005-04-3)

This complete guide to painting gives information on tools, and techniques and explains the many different mediums that an artist can use such as watercolour, oils, acrylics and crayons.

The content deals with different aspects of making art - it’s about the activity of painting, communicating ideas, images and impressions and coming to terms with basic skills.

The Art Class is instructed by a list of professional artists who each give individual advice. The book is divided into three chapters: Where to start; What should I paint; and What are the basic requirements.

Where to start suggests keeping a sketchbook, organising one’s studio, and how to go about finding subject matter. There are discussions about classic themes such as still life, landscape, interior/exterior, figures and portraits.

There’s much practical advice on composition, light and posing a figure, but there’s no particular focus on colour.

Equally important are the chapters on art materials, whether to use board or canvas, palette knife or brush and all the different brushes available.

The language of art is not difficult to learn but for an amateur artist it can seem complicated and confusing at first. For those not familiar with art terminology there’s a glossary of terms which would prove to be extremely useful.

What this book does is create avenues to reach your own way of working as an artist and, perhaps by reading the book and following expert advice, enable you to do it more quickly and efficiently. Ultimately, whether you are a budding amateur or trained professional, each will find his/her own way of painting and Art Class can be a most useful guide and companion.

Beginners will get the most benefit from the Art Class, while the more experienced artists will be intrigued by Artist’s Color (American spelling) by the same author which would be an added investment.

Art Class – a practical guide to painting by Simon Jennings is available from Spectrum in Umgeni Road, Durban (e-mail: spectrum@megajet.co.za) at a price of R307. Artist’s Color is available at the same outlet at the same price – Marianne Meijer
