DEENA PADAYACHEE (article first published : 2005-03-27)

During March, award-winning and internationally acclaimed author and celebrated poet, Dr Deena Padayachee, was invited to address close on 300 matric students from Estcourt Secondary, Estcourt High and Drakensberg Secondary schools. The students are studying his book of short stories: What’s Love Got To Do With It?

His presentation covered each of the six stories in the book, with Deena discussing the attitude of the time, adversities endured by the author, and experiences that led to the birth of each of the stories.

Deena Padayachee grew up in Umhlali and attended the R A Padayachee and Stanger High Schools. Among his numerous awards and prizes are the Nadine Gordimer Prize, The Olive Schreiner Prize, a Grahamstown Eisteddfod Prize, The Quill Award and the Fay Goldie Award for his prose writing. His work has been featured on the SABC short story slot and has had his writing published in India, Denmark, USA, Canada and the United Kingdom.
