CROSSING BORDERS ENDS (article first published : 2005-03-21)

The British Council and Lancaster University are wrapping up their cross-cultural distance-learning project for South African and Botswanan writers Crossing Borders.

Fifteen writers have been participating in a seven-month programme which promotes cross-cultural dialogue between writers working in English in South Africa (in the fields of poetry, prose fiction and writing for children) and experienced UK-based mentors. This is facilitated through dedicated on-line information technology facilities, which assists in opening up a shared creative and cultural space. Each writer on the programme has been linked to a professional UK writer and they have been communicating through e-mail exchange. A website was set up to facilitate further discussion and debate www.crossingborders-africanwriting.org

Alongside Devi Sankaree Govender and Sandile Ngidi from KwaZulu-Natal, the writers are Proctor Dladla, Ntombi Lawrence, Siphiwo Mahala, Napo Masheane and Sarah Warner from Gauteng. Western Cape is represented by Zamani Mkhwanazi, Peter Merrington and Dorian Haarhoff. Maren Bodenstein comes from Mpumalanga and Phomelelo Machika from Limpopo. Botswanan writers are Enole Ditsheko, Kabelo Joseph and Gasebalwe Seretse.

The project was co-ordinated by the Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA).

For further information on the project, contact the PANSA National Office on 011 492 3211 or pansa@artslink.co.za or visit www.britishcouncil.org/southafrica
