CULTURAL STUDIES JOURNAL (article first published : 2000-05-21)

Critical Arts: A Journal For Cultural Studies is the second theme issue of Cultural Studies in Africa II, Vol 13(2) 1999 edited by Keyan G Tomaselli, now available at the Centre for Cultural and Media Studies, University of Natal.

The Media section includes Alternative “Journalisms”; Social Movement Cyberspace Computer Networks, and Africa by Brian Martin Murphy (University of Massachusetts); Ubuntu in South Africa: a Sociolinguistic Perspective to a Pan-African Concept by Nkonko Kwamwangamalu (University of Natal), and In Search of a Real Freedom: Ubuntu and the Media by Ngaire Blankenberg (University of Natal).

Negotiations/Transitions features The African Renaissance: Lessons from a Predecessor by Anton A. van Niekerk (University of Stellenbosch). In Provocations, there is (Un)Changing Theoretical Trends in the Study of Folklore in South Africa by Cleopas Mphela Thosango (University of the North) and African Renaissance: A Quest for (Un)attainable Past by Gibsen Boloka (University of the North/Natal).

Comment includes Stuart Hall's (1997) Random Thoughts Provoked by the Conference, "Identities, Democracy, Culture and Communication in Southern Africa” by John J Williams (City of Cape Town) and a response invited from Professor Pitika Ntuli, University of Durban-Westville/Sankofa, to Sehume and Boloka. Under Book Review, Appropriating Images by Keyan Tomaselli is reviewed by Natalie Milbrodt (Michigan State University).
