KAROO MOONS (article first published : 2005-01-1)

The Christmas season always produces a rash of coffee table books but Karoo Moons is unusual, combining remarkable and beautiful photographs with philosophical poetry inspired by a region of South Africa long neglected and forgotten.

In 2002, photographer Richard Mark Dobson submitted a proposal to the French magazine, GEO, to produce a road-style photo essay of the Great Karoo.

“The assignment resulted in a three-week trundle along the back roads in my trusty old Toyota Land Cruiser, along with my plate cameras,” explains Dobson who was born in Yorkshire and educated in South Africa between 1975 and 1983. After traveling close on 6,000 kilometres, he returned home “a dusty convert”.

“If Karoo Moons- A Photographic Journey is to serve any purpose, it is simply to encourage an appreciation of the Great Karoo, to inspire people to wander its dusty roads, explore its hills and valleys, and to talk to its wonderful inhabitants,” he says.

The author of the book is Cape Town writer and journalist Ruben Mowszowski, a winner of the South African Science and Technology Journalism Award. His articles on rock art and astronomy have been published internationally.

With Richard Mark Dobson and author Ruben Mowszowski, one travels into the spiritual heart of South Africa exploring the people and environment of this vast wilderness.

The scarcity of natural resources has shaped the flora, wildlife and humans since time immemorial and the remarkable photographs capture the evocative beauty and history of the ancient landscape, while the accompany poetry conjures haunting and thought provoking images.

Karoo Moons - A Photographic Journey will encourage appreciation of this dry and ancient land and inspire further exploration. Published by Struik, it includes 168 pages in full colour and retails at R250. ISBN No 1 77007 012 5 – Sheina Wood
