KAROO RAMBLINGS (article first published : 2004-12-13)

David Biggs, wine writer and columnist of the Cape Argus in Cape Town, is a son of the Karoo. His family have farmed there for the past eighty years and he grew up on a sheep farm in the Middelburg area.

His Karoo Ramblings is a softcover book that conveys admirably the traditions and atmosphere of the Karoo, a vast, often desolate and forbidding area that has a magic of its own for those who know it and those who choose to explore beyond the confines of the N1 national road from Cape Town to Johannesburg.

The title is well chosen. This is a well-written collection of reminiscences and ruminations covering the history, geography, climate, wild life and above all the people of the Karoo. The author says he has changed some names and places and adds that he makes no claim to perfect accuracy. That does not matter. This is not a text book. It is a vivid picture of a way of life which is remote from the city lights but which exercises a powerful hold over all those who have ever experienced it.

The illustrations by newspaper cartoonist Tony Grogan add piquant humour to the book. Published by Struik, it retails at R99,95. - Michael Green
