BOTSWANA - THE INSIDERS GUIDE (article first published : 2004-10-7)

Botswana The Insiders Guide by Ian Michler provides valuable insight into the life and people of this exciting country, plus practical details on the best overland trips to be taken, ideal camps and lodges for safaris. Also included are insider tips on where to find the best art, crafts, festivals and local music.

Botswana has been a second home to Ian Michler for more than a decade and his passion and commitment is evident in his writings and photographs. Although a stockbroker by profession, he left the financial world in 1989 to live and work in the Okavango Delta. When not conducting big game, birding and adventure photographic safaris, he works as a photojournalist writing on conservation, wild life and travel issues.

The information in this guide has been carefully selected with accompanying colour photographs highlighting the topics under discussion. The initial chapters introduce the reader to Botswana, and are filled with interesting facts on this country, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa”, due to its political stability and economic success. The chronological history is fascinating, taking the reader back to the period from BC 1700 to AD 1650 when the Khoikoin and Bushmen inhabited the region, which was to become Botswana.

Botswana is noted for its diverse array of wildlife and the natural environment in which it is found and the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, Makgadikgadi Pans and Tuli Block are given the credit they deserve. The Okavango, Southern Africa’s largest wetland is described in detail: the five major routes leading to Maun, the “Gateway to the Okavango” are presented with accompanying maps. Interesting towns, plus historical sites passed through en route are discussed- for example, the Shakawe Route includes the Tsodilo Hills, Africa’s premier Bushmen rock art site and is also Botswana’s first World Heritage Site.

The closing chapters include information on Botswana’s contemporary art scene plus an insight into the people and their cultural traditions. Carefully researched, beautifully presented with accompanying marvellous colour photographs, this guide should prove indispensable for travellers visiting Botswana.

Botswana The Insiders Guide is published by Struik in softcover with flaps, ISBN 1 86872 996 6. Price R179.95 - Rosemary Lethbridge
