READING OF NEW WRITING (article first published : 2004-10-7)

The Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA) has announced that five new South African plays have been selected for the third PANSA Festival of Reading of New Writing that will take place in Cape Town from November 19 to 21, 2004.

The aims of the Festival sponsored by the Royal Netherlands Embassy (RNE) are to generate original South African theatre works, to provide a platform for these works to reach the attention of theatre producers, and to work towards full-scale productions of the winning plays.

Some 40 scripts were received for the Festival and, of these, five have been selected by the three judges, Delecia Forbes, Ashraf Johaardien and Liz Mills. They are: Comedienne by Fred Benbow-Hebbert (Cape Town); Act of Morality by John Kench (Cape Town); Third Coming by Martin Koboekae (Johannesburg); Full Circle by Kobus Moolman (Durban) and Hostile Takeover by Peter September (Sasolburg).

During the festival, the five plays will be read by professional actors and each reading will be followed by a discussion about the play, dialogue with the writer, and feedback from the judges. The judges and the audience members who attend all five readings will vote for the play they think has the most potential for a professional production.

The public is welcome to attend the play readings and discussions. Venue details and a full programme will be available shortly watch this space!
