STAGE MAGAZINE (article first published : 2004-08-14)

The cover of the June to August issue of Stage Magazine features the award-winning troupe from Mean Mr Mustard. The reasonable price of the magazine – R20 – also includes a CD and poster of the band.

After two editions of taking a break as editor of Stage Magazine, and focusing more on production and layout, publisher Gustav Andor is again at the helm with Lizl Strauss as editor.

This edition is, again, jam-packed with reviews of all kinds: live music reviews from all over SA, and the latest movie, CD, DVD, Playstation, book reviews and previews. This issue’s review section is dedicated to SA bands with notable albums. Some of them are Waverley, summersalt, Cofield Mundi, Danny K, Just Jinger, Mean Mr Mustard (Best Of), The Dolly Rockers and Tree63.

The Stage Awards go to Summerville Restaurant in Camps Bay (Best Trendy Restaurant with Live Music), A Handful of Keys (Best Musical Theatre Production), The Dolly Rockers (Die Hard Rockers Award) and to Going Nowhere Slowly on SABC 3 (SA Music TV Support Award).

“Dave Chislett has a column on Pop-Rock SA,” explains Lizl Strauss. “The regular clubbing column by DJ Nick Matthews gives the lowdown on today’s dreaded music evil – music piracy. You can make a decision about copying music after reading Orly Stern’s notes on SA prison life (on the same page). Guy Willoughby’s theatre/acting column offers a fresh take on “onse” Charlize Theron, saying: “She is her own creation, owing nothing in her rise to stardom to her home country...” Also, Louise Carver asks why shouldn’t a successful South African album be a successful album world-wide? A headline from Paul Blom’s “Alternative” column reads: “SA has never really seen an Afrikaans punk band of significance – until Fokofpolisiekar, that is.” Another new column, on fashion, looks at hot and happening gear for this winter and always features something in celebration of SA models and starmakers.”

There is an interview with Danny K, who was nominated for four SAMA awards this year!, and (supported by Levi’s Original Music) Albert Frost and Tumi of Tumi and the Volume. Regulars, like news on new music gear, guitar tabs (this time the song is Secret Places by Mean Mr Mustard) and ‘Know Your Instruments’ (Cymbals) by Mike Laatz is a must for music lovers.
