PANSA EXTENDS DEADLINES (article first published : 2004-07-26)

The Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA) has extended the deadline for scripts for the third PANSA Festival of Reading of New Writing, to be held later this year. The closing date for entries is now July 30. The aims of the Festival are to generate original South African theatre works, to provide a platform for these works to reach the attention of theatre producers, and to work towards full-scale productions of the winning plays.

The first two festivals were a resounding success: in 2002, the event was hosted by Spier, with six finalists on board. Both winning plays, Salaam Stories by Ashraf Johaardien and Bungi writing finals by Finuala Dowling, were produced as part of the Spier Summer Festival in 2003. Johaardien’s gem has since enjoyed several full-length runs. Last year’s jury winner, Mike van Graan’s Green Man Flashing, debuted on the Fringe at the National Arts Festival with possible longer runs later in the year, while 2003 audience winner, Guy Willoughby’s Church Full of Light ran at the Baxter Theatre Centre in early July.

A panel of judges will select the five best scripts for participation in the Festival. Each of the selected scripts will be given a basic subsidy to fund reading rehearsals and S&T as required. The Festival will be open to writers throughout South Africa.

Enquiries including criteria to 011 880 5486 or pansa@artslink.co.za

Submissions to be sent to PANSA Western Cape at Postnet Suite 126, Private Bag X18, Rondebosch, 7701, Cape Town by July 30. Hand written submissions and those that arrive after July 30, will not be accepted. Writers will be notified of the outcomes by end August.
