POETRY FOR SANLAM (article first published : 2000-03-29)

The Grahamstown Foundation has announced that poetry is the genre selected for the Sanlam Literary Awards for 2000. Three adjudicators will choose a winner in each of the two categories: unrestricted and restricted.

The unrestricted category offers a prize of R5 000 for the best original collection of poems whether or not the author has published previous collections in book form. The restricted category will go to the best collection (minimum of 25 poems) from an author whose work has not previously been published in book form and carries a monetary value of R4 000. An entry in this category is automatically eligible for both prizes.

Only South African poets whose work is in English and is entirely original may enter this prestigious annual event. The awards will be made during the Standard Bank National Arts Festival from June 30 to July 8 and each winner will receive a free trip to Grahamstown and one night’s accommodation as part of the prize.

Poets who have been honoured previously with the award include Douglas Livingstone for his collection A Littoral Zone, Francis Faller for Verse-over, Tatamkulu Africa for Turning Points, Arja Salafranca for A Life Stripped of Illusions, David McKay for Passages, Place Names and Don Maclennan for his collection Solstice.

Entries, accompanied by an official entry form, must be submitted to the organisers before April 7. Entry forms and information from Kate Axe at the Grahamstown Foundation, Sanlam Literary Awards, P O Box 304, Grahamstown, 6140. Phone (046) 622 4341; fax (046) 622 3082 or e-mail: sbnaf@foundation.intekom.com.
