POETRY AFRICA 2000 FESTIVAL (article first published : 2000-03-27)

Durban's literary world will once again be able to feast on words at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre when the fourth annual Poetry Africa Festival hosted by the University's Centre for Creative Arts begins on May 8 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.

The festival sees some 20 local and international poets gather together in a celebration of poetry each evening where they will present a selection of their work. Poets this year include legendary British poets Roger McGough and Benjamin Zepaniah brought to South Africa courtesy of the British Council. Other notable poets are Peter Kantor (Hungary), Thomas Tidholm (Sweden), Susan Kiguli (Uganda), Simon Vinkenoog (Netherlands), Olga Sedakova (Russia), Philip Hammial (Australia), Francis Bebey (Cameroon), Toyin Adewale (Nigeria), and American poet laureate Rita Dove.

The large South African contingent includes Zolani Mkiva, best known for his dynamic praise poetry, who was seen worldwide on television by millions in his colourful performance at the inauguration of the President Nelson Mandela. Other South African poets include Gus Ferguson, Otis Finck, Pitika Ntuli, Kelwyn Sole and Lisa Combrinck.

The poets will also be visiting schools and tertiary institutions during the day.

Tickets are available from the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre each evening from May 8 - 13. For further information about the festival as well as the schools programme call (031) 260-2506.
