FRONTIERS OF CONSCIENCE (article first published : 2004-03-7)

Adams Campus Books and IKE’s Books & Collectables recently launched Professor Martin Prozesky’s new book Frontiers of Conscience – Exploring Ethics for a New Millennium.

The coming of a new millennium sees South Africa and the wider world facing problems of conflict, crime, corruption, violence and pollution on a scale seldom if ever before experienced, to mention just these challenges. For that very reason, the new millennium also calls for a renewed moral vision, courage and effort, challenging us all to rise to new peaks of ethical achievement.

Martin Prozesky is one of South Africa's leading ethicists. In Frontiers of Conscience, he brings together a series of clearly written explorations that take readers to and beyond the new moral frontier of our time. Based on press articles published during the past decade, these explorations offer a way forward to a future where people of different cultures, histories and faiths can, nonetheless, create a shared ethic as the sure foundation of a better world.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu has described the book as “…a scholarly analysis of what has gone wrong in our rainbow nation with practical suggestions for the moral regeneration we all need so desperately. Eminently readable, and what is more, accessible for all, it should be required reading for all earnest citizens."

A Fellow of the University of Natal and a former Dean of Humanities, Professor Prozesky is the founding Director of the Unilever Ethics Centre, and inaugural holder of the Unilever Chair of Comparative and Applied Ethics. His research has focused on secular moral commitment in adults, global ethics and neurobiological perspectives on morality. He has authored and edited several books and many journal papers, and is well-known as a speaker and author of press articles on ethical and spiritual subjects.

Frontiers of Conscience retails for R90 and is published by Equinym Publishing, Pietermaritzburg.
