LIVE POETS GO GREEN (article first published : 2004-03-1)

The guest poet at this month's gathering of the Live Poets' Society is Michael Green, Professor of English studies at the University of KZN, Durban. He initiated and heads the creative writing stream in the English Programme, and has also taught creative writing at the University of Texas.

In 1997 Penguin published his celebrated verse novella Sinking, which won the University of Natal Book Prize. Excerpts have appeared in several distinguished anthologies and journals. Also in 1997, his book Novel Histories was published by Witwatersrand University Press.

Prof Green is a founder of Durban's annual Poetry Africa Festival in which he has appeared both as a presenter and performer.

Taking a cue from his name, plus the fact that St Patrick's Day is this month, the evening's theme is Green. Those attending are asked to wear something green, and present their poems which interpret that broad subject. They could range from "the green-ey'd monster" to eco-friendliness.Then during the Poet Pourri session, poets will have the chance to air their work on any subject they wish. All are welcome, regardless of whether they write poetry, and entry is free although donations towards costs are appreciated.

The meeting takes place at Adams Books Coffee Shop in Durban's Musgrave Centre at 17h30 on March 10. For more details phone Brett on 082 516 0517, 031 266 4762 (a/h) or e-mail thirdeye@3i.co.za
