TIME OF THE WRITER (article first published : 2000-03-5)

Acclaimed top writers of the world appear in Durban next week for the Time of the Writer festival to be held at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Hosted by the University of Natal’s Centre for the Creative Arts in conjunction with the French Institute of South Africa, the festival features 17 international writers in a week-long programme that celebrates literature.

Each evening from 19h00 a selection of writers will read and discuss aspects of their writing and the writing of others in a programme chaired by a local personality. The programme is as follows:

March 6: Presenter and guest speaker Professor Kole Omotoso, Professor of English at the University of the Western Cape, will introduce all the festival participants to the audience. As a finale there will be a special dance performance by Siwela Sonke Dance Company.

March 7:Chaired by SAFM Out to Lunch presenter Dianne Barnard with Joanna Trollope (UK), Adolf Muschg (Switzerland) and Einar Már Gudmundsson (Iceland).

March 8: Chaired by well-known South African writer Stephen Gray with Adriaan van Dis (Netherlands), Sylvie Germain (France) and Ivan Vladislavic (S.A.).

March 9: Chaired by Professor Shirley Kossick, leading South African book critic, with Margaret Drabble (UK), Prof Lazarus Miti (Zambia) and Ruth Schweikert (Switzerland).

March 10: Chaired by Gita Pather, Playhouse Director of Operations, with Dr Gomolemo Mokae (SA), Maryse Condé (Guadeloupe) and Nancy Huston (Canada).

March 11: Once again Professor Kole Omotoso presents the programme which features Lieve Joris (Belgium), Emmanuel Dongala (Congo), Ahmadou Kourouma (Ivory Coast) and Goretti Kyomuhendo (Uganda).

The writers will also participate in visits to 20 schools in and around Durban promoting a culture of reading and writing amongst the youth. There is also a programme of workshops (see separate article)

All booking for the festival is through Computicket. Tickets are R15 and are also available at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 18h00 between March 6 and 11. More details from (031) 260-2506 or 260-3118.
