DRUMMING UP POETRY (article first published : 2003-11-30)

The Live Poets' Society is ending the year with a bang as the United Souls poetry and percussion group will be the guest artists at their next get-together. This eclectic band of "gypsies" accompany poet David Nicoll with their hand-crafted West African djembe drums, didgeridoos, and Tibetan bells and bowls in a pulsating and mesmerising performance. They are favourites at South Africa's top festivals including Splashy Fen and Southern Cross.

David himself hails from Scotland, lives in Durban and has had his verse published all over the world. He is also a member of the band Hakuna Matata which recently recorded the CD entitled Ecology.

“In the spirit of the gathering, the evening's theme is Rhythm,” says organiser Brett Beiles. “Poets, versifiers, rhymesters, song-writers and singers are welcome to do their thing on this or any other subject. Bring your instruments if you wish, let your hair down (if you have) and enjoy the jam. Keeping with the time-honoured instruments and the beat of United Souls, the dress code is Traditional. So get out your trad-rags, no matter what tradition they represent.”

The Live Poets Society gathering starts at 17h30 on December 10 at Adams Books Coffee Shop in Musgrave Centre. All are welcome, whether they write poetry or not. Entrance is free although there is a donation box for those who wish to contribute towards expenses. For more details contact Brett - 082 516 0517, 031 266 4762 (a/h), thirdeye@3i.co.za
